Chandler appoints director of community services to oversee city libraries, parks and recreation facilities and programs

CHANDLER, Ariz. — City Manager Josh Wright has appointed John Sefton as director of community services for the city of Chandler. In this new role, Sefton will oversee the department that manages and operates the Chandler Public Library, more than 60 parks and a dozen recreational and aquatic facilities.

“We are delighted to welcome John to this important role at Chandler,” said Wright. “His more than 20 years of experience as the director of parks, recreation facilities and libraries for Arizona communities brings a wealth of industry knowledge and experience to our city.”

Sefton joins Chandler after serving as Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities for the City of Peoria since 2012. His previous experience includes serving as Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Tucson for five years and Director of city ​​parks and recreation. of Prescott Valley for two years.

Sefton has also worked for Pulte Homes and Del Webb to develop and manage parks and recreation facilities and services for planned communities in Florence and Anthem.

Sefton’s early experience in the recreation industry began in Chandler working seasonal and part-time lifeguard and recreation positions for a five-year period from 1987 to 1992.

Sefton holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in administration in land use and community planning from Northern Arizona University. He is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional and holds a Certificate in Public Policy and Management from the University of Arizona.
