Job Opportunities: WoodGreen Community Services Settlement Counselor – Toronto, ON

Newcomer Programs and Services have served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle, adapt and integrate into society.

Funded by all three levels of government, WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs, settlement services, employment support programs, mentoring, networking activities, and social and recreational activities.

What will you do

  • Offer individual support to newcomers and families in their settlement and integration process.
  • Engage clients in a holistic intake and assessment process to identify and prioritize individual and family settlement needs and develop settlement plans.
  • Identify, connect and coordinate clients with appropriate internal and external resources meeting client needs, taking into account culture, language and background.
  • Actively operate internal programs and services and work with external service providers and government agencies to maximize newcomer access to resources and to improve service capacity.
  • Plan, develop, facilitate and evaluate group programs and activities, including online workshops.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate an outreach plan that promotes the range of opportunities available to newcomers and their families.
  • Participate in all aspects of program monitoring and evaluation.
  • Offer a full range of settlement services at a variety of satellite sites with partner organizations.
  • Collaborate with other WoodGreen teams and other agencies to plan services to meet client needs.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including statistical data, and complete reports and enter data into relevant data management systems.
  • Achieve prescribed targets for clients and related services.

What you bring to the team

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education or a related discipline.
  • Second language required preferably Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Tagalog, Tamil or Urdu.
  • At least two (2) years of individual work experience providing settlement services to newcomers, including refugees.
  • As of September 7, 2021, all newly hired employees will be required to provide proof that they have completed an approved COVID-19 vaccination program at least 14 days before starting work or providing supporting documentation. an exemption based on grounds covered by the Ontario Human Rights Act (ie medical exemption).

  • Experience working with low income, multiracial and multilingual immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship skills, ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with clients, staff, volunteers and partner agencies.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to communicate with clients of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and supportive counseling.
  • Strong reception and assessment skills and demonstrated information and guidance skills.
  • Experienced in the development, evaluation and facilitation of workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate in a team and between teams.
  • Strong organizational / planning skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong technology and documentation skills to inform the program and meet organizational and donor requirements.
