Muslim Community Services (MCS) is a group of diverse professionals dedicated to improving the community engagement of newcomers.

Our agency was established in 1987 as a non-profit organization to serve and work with newcomers to facilitate their settlement and integration into Canada. We offer a wide range of services and learning opportunities to connect newcomers to a brighter future in the ever-changing Canadian society. The Domestic Violence Counselor will be responsible for supporting vulnerable and at-risk women by addressing their immediate needs by providing and engaging them through culturally appropriate counselling, safety planning, advocacy and education . In addition, will provide services to women victims of domestic violence by offering counselling, referral, problem solving and support services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gathers relevant information about customer issues, needs, and risks by interviewing, observing behavior, and using a variety of inventories, checklists, and questionnaires
  • Performs comprehensive risk assessments: identifies safety issues and helps individuals reduce risk
  • Provides support, counseling and problem solving to clients to resolve family functioning issues in an individual or group setting
  • Build supportive relationships with survivors of violence, case-specific information and updates; provides emotional support and practical assistance
  • Support advice, information and referral to appropriate legal, medical and housing services and other community resources
  • Participates in the development, modification and evaluation of client service plans with the integrated case management team
  • Develops and implements an intervention plan within program guidelines
  • Provides parenting skills workshops to clients on issues such as parent-child interaction, child development, discipline and guidance, and other related topics
  • Raises awareness of issues of violence against women in the community we serve; plan and develop community outreach materials and strategies
  • Provides information and referrals to other community service providers, resources and professionals as needed
  • Liaise and network with other service providers, institutions and government agencies; attend meetings and participate in sub-committees
  • Case management, maintenance of client files and documentation
  • Maintains records and related statistics and provides monthly reports to supervisor
  • Performing administrative duties i.e. record keeping, admissions procedures, reports
  • Any other responsibilities prescribed by the board or designate that are complementary to the position
  • Reporting to the General Manager or his representative(s)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or a combination of similar post-secondary education with a minimum of 3 years of work experience and specialized training
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated work experience in crisis intervention or counseling on violence against women, particularly with diverse communities
  • In-depth knowledge of domestic violence issues, the cycle of violence and the impact of violent behaviors on women, children and men
  • Crisis intervention, supportive counseling and problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, presentation and facilitation skills
  • Good team player, with the ability to collaborate and share ideas
  • Flexible, self-motivated, able to work independently and maintain good relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Ability to work with diverse people and communities being aware of socio-economic and cultural barriers
  • Knowledge of community resources and settlement issues and trends as they relate to the geography, demographics and economics of Peel Region/GTA
  • A good written and oral command of English and one of the following languages ​​is a definite asset: Urdu, Hindi and/or Punjabi
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with ease and professionalism; able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)

  • A vulnerable sector criminal record check is required as part of the hiring process
  • Must have own transposition, driver’s license and insurance to use your vehicle for work-related travel
