Opening of a new community service center in the Downtown Eastside

The new Evelyne Saller Community Center at 404 Alexander Street will officially open next month and will provide important health and social support services to thousands of low-income adults.

The former center was the largest food supplier in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), serving more than 850 low-cost meals a day. It also provided 22,000 showers and 19,000 loads of laundry per year as well as social and recreational programs. The brand new center will also provide a cooling respite zone and temporary weather emergency response shelter during the winter. Evelyne Saller Center is operated by the City of Vancouver with funding provided by the City and BC Housing.

Roddan Lodge

Roddan Lodge, located above the new Evelyne Saller Center at 124 Dunlevy Avenue, has been open since February and features a mix of 213 units consisting of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units for low- and middle-income families, couples, people with disabilities and singles. More than two-thirds of the houses are rented at the provincial housing rate, providing very affordable housing for more than 140 residents.

Built to the highest standards to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the new building uses electric heat pump systems to provide heating, cooling and hot water.

The 11-storey LEED Platinum certified building includes:

  • Amenity spaces such as a TV lounge
  • Four outdoor and rooftop gardens
  • A playground for children
  • Library
  • A music room and full kitchen with living room for community gatherings

The building was designed by dys Architects and built by Smith Bothers & Wilson.

Funding

The building was made possible by a City of Vancouver Land Contribution of $4 million, a City Capital Contribution of $53.6 million and a Capital Grant of $4.8 million. from BC Housing’s Housing Innovation Investment Fund. The Government of Canada has provided federal funding under the Seed Program, which is designed to cover the costs of carrying out pre-development activities related to the construction of new affordable housing across Canada.
