Kits provide comfort, entertainment and enrichment

PASO ROBLES – The City of Paso Robles Library and Recreation Services Divisions are pleased to partner with local agencies to provide comfort kits for children and families struggling with situations such as homelessness, trauma or crises. To date, over 80 kits have been distributed to ECHO, the Paso Robles Fire Department and the Paso Robles Police Department.

According to Youth Services Librarian Melissa Bailey, the idea for these kits began with the library’s goal of increasing community awareness and a timely offer from ASB President Malia Gaviola, to donate extra books at a recent high school book drive. First approaching ECHO with the idea of providing book bags with supplies for children entering the shelter, Bailey set about selecting items that would provide children and teens with comfort, distraction and enrichment. both short term and over time. Originally funded by the Paso Robles Library Foundation, the initiative has expanded to include support from Friends of the Library and the Recreation Foundation with the goal of comforting young people in critical situations while giving them access to library resources. and recreation. Comfort kits include drawstring backpacks, journals and pens, coloring books and crayons, anti-stress and anti-stress toys, teddy bears, and school-provided books. Gathered at the library on March 14, Gaviola and her team of teenagers built more than 200 kits in less than an hour.

“When Malia approached us with this incredible book donation, collected by PRJUSD students, we wanted to find a way to really put these books to good use. We introduced it to some of our partners and they were more than happy. happy to join us. We now have over 200 comfort kits to distribute,” said Bailey, adding, “We encourage nonprofits in Paso Robles who work with children and teens in crisis to contact us, so that we can ensure that these kits reach the children who need them.
